Issac was impacted by the chicken project as well: “Seeing the chickens gave me a sense of hope; I was so encouraged by how fast they grow that I was encouraged to start my own project!” He’s beginning work on a small pen to take care of chickens at his home, and Geoffrey is giving him advice and support.
While caring for a chicken may seem like a small thing, we know that God made each little chick, and He cares about how we treat the animals He’s made. He’s called us to be faithful stewards and watch over all of His creation with compassion. Did you know that God even talks about chickens in the Bible? It’s true! There are several verses about us hiding under the shadow of God’s wings—just like a mama hen protects her babies by hiding them under her wings.
Psalm 63:7 says “For you have been my help, and in the shadow of your wings I will sing for joy,” and Psalm 91:4 says “He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.” Now, these verses might refer to an eagle or another bigger, mightier bird, but since David was a shepherd and familiar with chickens, we like to think they are referring to a mama hen!
Much later, Jesus might have thought about these very Psalms when he said about Jerusalem: “How often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings.”
Seeing how carefully Geoffrey cares for each little chick and chicken reminds us of the tenderness and care God shows each of us. Thank you, Geoffrey, for this wonderful example!
