Everything seemed to be fine when Luyando was born, but soon she started displaying troubling symptoms. Her head was growing faster and larger than the rest of her body.
Luyando’s mother, Brenda, was encouraged to take her to a traditional healer, who told Brenda that Luyando was suffering from a normal condition that some children get. His solution was to give Luyando traditional tattoos.
When the tattoos didn’t work, Brenda became concerned and took her to a clinic.
That’s when the waiting began.
First it was multiple trips to the clinic, then admission to a hospital, then admission to another hospital, and then a month of waiting.
Hope for healing felt more and more unrealistic with each passing day.
Finally, a doctor from CURE Zambia brought Brenda and Luyando to CURE, where it was confirmed that she had hydrocephalus, a condition where excess fluid accumulates in and around the brain. When left untreated, hydrocephalus can be fatal.
Luyando had surgery the very next day.
Today, Luyando is a completely healthy little girl. She is just like any other child her age. She goes to school; she watches cartoons; she likes to help Brenda in the kitchen. Brenda hopes Luyando grows up to be a doctor someday so she can help other children.
“CURE drew me closer and closer to God as I was there. I believe that God exists at CURE and they truly put Him as the first priority in everything they do.” -Brenda
